Interested in playwriting, acting or just mad about the theatre? Join Cambridge Scriptwriting group WRiTEON over the next four Sunday evenings as it presents the MAD Festival at the ADC Theatre’s Larkum Studio. A festival of short plays for one or two actors, MAD stands for ‘Monologues and Duologues’. WRiTEON artistic director Sarah Ingram explains, "People sometimes think a monologue is just a long speech but it’s more than that - our writers are challenged to tell a complete and gripping story with just one voice, or, in the case of a duologue, two voices. Writing plays for one or two voices is a great way to learn about the craft of playwriting and the quality of pieces we get is outstanding." Plays at the festival are performed as readings: rehearsed and with simple staging but with scripts in hand. Performing as readings allows WRiTEON to introduce many plays in one festival - more than 35 this year by writers from Cambridgeshire and beyond. Plays are in all genres - this year’s festival includes sketch comedy, kitchen sink drama, period pieces and dramatic essays by authors including Trevor Suthers, Trish Rawson, Rachel Mariner, Paul Richards, Jean Rees-Lyons, Bryn Taylor, Rifat Siddiqui and Colin Hume. Actors are a mix of professionals and talented amateurs from WRiTEON’s acting corps. Each evening’s performance is followed by an optional feedback session where the audience can let writers know what they think of the new plays. Plays introduced in WRiTEON’s readings have gone on to productions throughout the country, and several of WRiTEON’s writers are this year taking plays to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The group welcomes new writers, actors, directors and supporters. See www.writeon.org.uk for more information.
