Following Germany's annexation of much of Czechoslovakia-Sudetenland, Jacob Silberstein, a doctor in a provincial Bohemia town, struggles to maintain the niceties of life. But his society is beginning to disintegrate around him: he is expelled from his home by his gardener, who has, found power and influence with the Nazis, and his brother is driven to suicide.
