No Man's Land is a brilliantly assured take on the absurdity of war, set against the recent Bosnian conflict. Ciki (a Bosnian) and Nino (a Serb) simultaneously fall into a trench in no man's land. If they leave they might get shot and if they stay a soldier, already in the trench and sitting on a spring-loaded bomb, could blow them all to pieces with one move. The UN, as usual, is confused, meanwhile the world's media smells a 'news situation'. Visually alluring (no mud and bullets here), and laced with black humour, this bright, clever view of war's insanity - and inanity - should on no account be missed. Academy Award for Best Foreign Film 2002.
