On 12 October 1972 a Fairchild F-227 chartered by an amateur rugby team left Uruguay for Santiago in Chile. Shortly before Christmas two emaciated young men staggered down from a high plateau in the Andes to announce that they were survivors of a plane which had crashed seventy days before.
