Set in 1920s America, it tells the story of Belle Schlumpfert, a little girl from the wrong side of the tracks, and her rise to fame and fortune. Her life takes a series of bizarre turns after she meets the high born Noble Eggleston who cannot marry her because she lacks 'wealth, culture and social position'.
