He leaves behind in Concord, Massachusetts matriarch Mrs March (Marmee) with their four daughters, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy who through the course of the musical turn from young girls into women. Eldest daughter Jo is headstrong, tomboy like, passionate and an aspiring writer. Despite her protestations she works for her wealthy Aunt March as a lady s companion bringing in much needed funds for the family.
