Two one act operas offer an excellent evening for music lovers. The story of Savitri is taken from the famous Indian epic poem Mahabarata. In the Hindu society these tales bring the assurance of continuity, so although Death comes to claim Satyavan, his wife Savitri overcomes him in a glorious conclusion. The Wandering Scholar, by Gustav Holst, verges on farce. With her husband out of the way, Alison entertains a lustful old priest until interrupted by a handsome wandering scholar..soon her husband returns as well!
