The Miserly Knight

T486051400
Rachmaninov's The Miserly Knight tells the eternal tale of the overwhelming desire for the power that vast wealth can bring, and the ultimate destruction that is wrought by avarice and greed. Each opera realises this theme through the drama of inheritance and the potentially destructive consequences of a legacy. The Miserly Knight was premiered in 1906, and is based on one of Pushkin's Little Tragedies which were written as psychological dramas in blank verse. It is the story of an amoral, omnipotent father, the Baron, who because of his visceral attachment to his vast wealth, keeps his son, Albert, in abject poverty. Originally written for the great Russian bass, Fyodor Chaliapin, it contains some of Rachmaninov's most haunting and evocative music.
