In 1957 Sid Chaplin moved with his family from a London suburb to Newcastle. An incomparable master of stories about the mining villages of his native Durham, Chaplin had written no fiction while working in London, but on his return to the North he found a subject that fired his imagination - the working class culture of Newcastle at a time of immense social change. He set about writing what he called 'social thrillers - two powerful, touching and critically acclaimed novels: The Day of the Sardine and The Watchers and the Watched. Now, 40 years after publication and 18 years after Sid s untimely death, Flambard is re-publishing these much-loved books, which richly deserve a new audience.
