A vivid and entertaining look at a fascinating period in Newcastle s history through the eyes of the celebrated writer behind two of Live s legendary productions, Close the Coalhouse Door and In Blackberry Time - Sid Chaplin. In 1957 Sid Chaplin moved with his family from a London suburb to Newcastle. An incomparable master of stories about the mining villages of his native Durham, Chaplin had written no fiction while working in London, but on his return to the North he found a subject that fired his imagination - the working class culture of Newcastle at a time of immense social change. He set about writing what he called 'social thrillers - two powerful, touching and critically acclaimed novels: The Day of the Sardine and The Watchers and the Watched. Now, 40 years after publication and 18 years after Sid s untimely death, Flambard is re-publishing these much-loved books, which richly deserve a new audience. With the help of Live Theatre and Sid s family and friends, Michael Chaplin introduces and recreates the worlds of the books and the man who wrote them.
