William Schwenk Gilbert is renowned as the hot-headed half of the partnership which became as much a national institution as Westminster Abbey - Gilbert and Sullivan. When knighted in 1907, Gilbert was proud to claim that he was 'the first to be so honoured for dramatic authorship alone'.
