A Disagreeable Man? archiveWilliam Schwenk Gilbert is renowned as the hot-headed half of the partnership which became as much a national institution as Westminster Abbey - Gilbert and Sullivan. When knighted in 1907, Gilbert was proud to claim that he was 'the first to be so honoured for dramatic authorship alone'. The play provides an animated and fascinating insight into the life of this irascible man - telling the story of his childhood, his brief career as a Civil servant, his less than successful years at the Bar and subsequent rise to fame as the librettist of the Savoy Operas.
