Birth After Death archiveBIRTH AFTER DEATH is an exciting theatre project, bringing together THE PERSIAN THEATRE GROUP and ENSEMBLE through the creative and collaborative relationship of Soussan Farrokhnia and Elizabeth Mansfield, who met whilst performing in WOMEN OF TROY at the Royal National Theatre, in 1995. Both theatre companies are committed to developing deeper understanding between British and Iranian culture and experience, and especially presenting the work of young Iranian writers, whose work cannot currently be performed in Iran, due to the political situation there. Soussan Farrokhnia has nurtured Behrouz Hosseinei s script, BIRTH AFTER DEATH. Through a workshop process, she has worked closely with Sheida Faroozi, a young exiled Iranian artist, and with Elizabeth Mansfield and Manouchehr Housseinpour, to develop a unique style of performance, so that the play can be understood by both Farsi and English speaking audiences. Elizabeth will play a special role in achieving this bi-lingual presentation. Behrouz Ghanbar Hosseinei, the writer, and Sheida Firoozi, who will play the 'tour de force leading role, have been close friends since their university days in Tehran, in their native Iran. Now, both living in exile, Behrouz in Germany and Sheida in London, they are re-united through working on BIRTH AFTER DEATH, which explores the role of women in Iranian society. The play tells the extraordinary, powerful and moving stories of three generations of women, from one family, in the south of Iran.
