Conversations with a Cupboard Man archiveThe Cupboard Man was trapped in his mother's house and treated as a two-year-old right up until he was eighteen. From there, he went to a special home, learning self-expression through dance and therapy. The Cupboard Man tells his tale, from his first 18 years of life to working in the kitchens of a posh hotel for a sadistic boss, through trying to contact his mother again, to a lonely existence in an attic flat. This is the story of the destruction of one man's psyche at the hands of virtually everyone he encounters, and of wishing for what might have been. Booker prize-winner Ian McEwan's short story is brought to life in an electrifying one-man show, performed against a soundtrack of local band Embrace's music.
