In the cigar factories of Cuba, the workers would club together to pay one of their number to read to them from the newspapers, novels, poems or political writings. In this cabaret, the spirit of that process of education and imagination is evoked through Cuban writings, interwoven with music and a song or two. By the time the siren sounds for the end of this very short working day, some insights into Cuban history and sensibilities will have been rolled into an easily portable shape.

Production details
The Cuban Cigar Factory, compiled by Mike Gonzelez and performed together with writer Chris Dolan and film maker Aymar Reques, drew a capacity audience at the Edinburgh Book Festival's Spiegeltent for two years running.
