Dido, Queen of Carthage archiveAeneas is a refugee in exile, fleeing a war-torn Troy and seeking new roots in Europe. Shipwrecked in Carthage, the meddling gods intervene; they fill Queen Dido with all-consuming love for Aeneas. In Marlowe's unsettling tale of sacrifice, the lovers must decide whether to follow their hearts or fulfil their political destinies. Dido, overwhelmed with passion, is propelled to her terrifying final act. This new show re-examines the ancient story of Dido and her tragic love affair with the exile Aeneas. The production concentrates on the love between these two exiles in their struggle to find a future. Two damaged individuals who have lost so much are thrown onto a foreign shore to share their love and their fears. Working from Christopher Marlowe's great play, this show is given a contemporary staging as modern allegory and text combines with this great and tragic story of two lovers to give this classic tale a startling new life and to create a visually exciting and theatrically challenging show. Theatre Modo is a Scottish based company formed to bring to life the magic of theatre.
