Fats and Tanya archiveKilburn, today. Tanya, a young Londoner with Irish roots, is in a women's refuge with her young son, retreating from a violent relationship. She's angry with her ex-partner, her mother and herself, and hasn't adjusted to her new status as a problem for society. She plays loud music, she's messy and she falls out with her fellow residents. Now she's in trouble for letting her son visit her family, and likely to be kicked out of the refuge. Fatima, Tanya's social worker, is at the top of her professional game. She's come a long way since she arrived in Britain from Bangladesh as a young woman with her new husband. Fatima prides herself on getting her clients to open up, but she is getting tired of sticking a plaster on society's ills in the current climate of austerity, and stroppy, mouthy Tanya is a handful. New playwright Lucy Gallagher takes this tale of two outsiders and turns it into a dark comedy about domestic violence and the power of an unlikely friendship. As Fatima and Tanya share secrets and memories, it is clear that their lives will never be the same after this encounter.
