When Johnny Owen, the Welsh boxing phenomenon known as The Matchstick Man, came to Los Angeles in 1980 to fight for the Bantamweight World Championship, he brought with him the hopes and dreams of every resident of his rural hometown. All the menfolk followed Johnny to California to cheer him on to victory, leaving the women behind to watch the game on the telly at the gym where Johnny trained. Three of those women are particularly connected to Johnny and his dreams of triumph: unhappily married Nia, who yearns for a broadcasting career with the BBC and was Johnny s confidant; her feisty, younger sister, Peg, who dreams of both becoming a boxer herself and of marrying Johnny when he returns; and Mrs. Davies, their sharp-tongued landlady and a local midwife, who helped bring Johnny into the world and now struggles with a fading sense of happiness. As the women breathlessly await the fight results, they also make plans for their own uncertain futures.
