Put together an enthusiastic son-in-law, a jealous daughter-in-law, two oppressed siblings and a mystified maid under the omnipresent terror of a tyrannical patriarch and there is a recipe for a chaotic evening of deception and confusion. Tatarstan's greatest playwright has crafted a superb comedy about the day that theatre first came to Kazan. For some it was a sign of movement from isolation towards the wider world, to others it represented the very worst of modern, western influences. To us today, it's a fabulous evening's entertainment! Going to the theatre will never seem so simple again.
