A new wave of 'wogs', 'coons' and 'pakis' coming into London during the mid-1970s, provide the fodder for a sense of aggressive patriotism among Alan and his friends. Their intention to march against recent muggings in the name of British Pride is not entirely misguided. Alan is going and he is black. It is only after Alan meets Tyrone that his attitudes are forced into question. Influenced transcends the 70s time frame, bringing contemporary attitudes into focus. British class and race-conflict are used as a forum for a much broader issue: It is about the weakness of the individual and how easily we are goaded into group ignorance.
