At the end of the First World War, young Scottish soldier Gregor McGregor is dispatched to a remote French village to dispose of a suspected bomb, wired to the village clock and due to detonate at the stroke of midnight. Fearing their lives, the local villagers have all fled - including the doctors at the local asylum. With the inmates taking on the role of villagers, they crown the soldier their king.
