Mad Kings and Englishmen archiveThis world premiere reviews two thousand years of English history in a pacey, palatable lunchtime performance. Inspired by Charles Dickens' A Child's History of England, we arrive in "The Sparkler's" world to find him battling to entertain his grumpy children with a brand new bedtime story The comedy unfurls at pace as we dip into Britain's dark secrets, the amorous affairs of the great and the good and the foolish foppery of members of the monarchy. From Wat Tyler, the leader of the peasants revolt (who stood atop the London Stone now on nearby Cannon Street), to horrid Henry VIII, no-one is spared in this witty reworking of Dickens' classic. The play is in two parts, playing on alternate days. Part 1 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Part 2 on Wednesdays and Fridays. Both stand alone as pieces of theatre, Part 1 tackling the early history and Part 2 moving from those prudish puritans to the mayhem of modernity.
