Memoirs of a Hermaphrodite archiveFor centuries the concept of the hermaphrodite has been shrouded in mystery, and feelings towards them have ranged from prophet to freak. Inspired by the true story of Herculin Barbin, Saah Leaver brings us a remarkable story of the struggle of an individual born between genders. Raised as female in the bittersweet safety of a nunnery, the young Herculin's true identity as a hermaphrodite is discovered when she falls in love with a girl. Forced to move to the city, she is pushed to the fringes of society and the dark, seedy underworlds and freak shows of 19th century Paris.
