Miss Julie archiveWritten in 1888 by August Strindberg, Miss Julie is set on Midsummer's Eve on the estate of a Count in Sweden. Miss Julie finds herself drawn to a named Jean, who is particularly well-travelled, well-mannered and well-read but he is engaged to the cook, Christine. Miss Julie and Jean's relationship escalates rapidly to feelings of love and is subsequently consummated. Over the course of the play Miss Julie and Jean battle until Jean convinces her that the only way to escape her predicament is to commit suicide. A new Asian version. Set against the oppressive and unstable backdrop of the crumbling Mughal era in India this reworking of Strindberg's classic was conceived by Nadia Ahmad and British Asian designer Rachana Jadhav, founders of Naach Theatre. This colourful and engaging production transposes the fraught original into a new time and space but remains loyal to its atmospheric study of Miss Julie and Jean's relationship.
