Mourning Glory archiveBased on the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales. The show was first performed in 1998 at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and also ran in January 1999, at the Sydney Opera House, as part of the Sydney Festival. In September 1997 the entire country ground to a halt for the Funeral of the Century. They said that 'nothing would ever be the same again' yet only five years later, the events of that day and the week leading up to it have taken on a surreal vagueness. Who can now remember which celebrity mourners showed up to pay their respects at Westminster Abbey? What unprecedented gesture did the Queen make as the coffin passed the front door? And just who, if anyone, was responsible for Diana's death, anyway?

User Review: 11Jan01: At last it can be told. Almost four years after Diana and Dodies fatal car ride in Paris, it s perfectly safe to laugh at the story of THAT WEEK when the queen of Hearts became a peoples saint and the nation went into deepest mourning. ‘Weren t we fools recalls writer, actor and comedian David Benson at the beginning of his irreverently funny one-man show. By the end of his performance you can only blush in agreement. ‘all you had to do was buy a cheap bunch of flowers and chuck them on the pile and you were a part of history he reminds us. He then proceeds to rewind the events surrounding the funeral of the century. Benson, best know for his triumphant show Think No Evil of Us is one of the most engaging solo performers I have ever seen. Unlike any other stand up comic you really want to interact with him and the lampoons are all done with a deceptively easy charm. Also, the date with Di is worth catching because uniquely Benson mixes his own personal history with the streaks of wicked black humour. Benson brought a four year relationship with his lover to an end and its that experience of coming to terms with lose that makes him one of our finest and funniest royal watchers. Roger Foss – Whats On 17 June Benson creates an unusually intimate atmosphere in the tiny theatre rather like an apre dinner party. Social satire at its sharpest, Mourning Glory makes you laugh, think and wince simultaneously. Nina Romain - TNT
