Tinniswood's adaptation transposes De Filippo's comic drama Napoli Milionaria! from its traditional setting in Naples to wartime Liverpool, telling the tale of ordinary folk doing what they needed to survive and prosper during the second World War. 1942, and Gennaro's wife Amalia has become the bread winner of the family by trading contraband items like coffee, sugar and pasta for money.
