Mark and Darren were close school friends, and meet after eight years apart. Mark, never one blessed with ambition, had run away to discover himself and the world. Darren, with dreams of being a famous writer, slipped into a stale marriage. Mark returns to his small, insignificant home town on the run from Mr. Cooney, a sadistic child-murderer to whom he owes a great deal of money. He hopes he can settle back in and relax in the familiar surroundings of his lost friendship. Darren suffers from great pangs of jealousy, as he believes his friend has lived the life he wanted to lead. But Darren knows little of the disturbing, nasty circumstances that has led to Mark's return, but when Mr. Cooney catches up with Mark events quickly lose control, and the small town lives are about to get a shock that will change everyone's circumstances forever.
