It is 1948. In a comfortable house on a Cornish estuary lives the widowed Stella, who regularly rejects proposals of marriage from her reliable suitor Robert. Stella's lively daughter brings home her artist husband, Evan, for the first time and Stella is disturbed by their Bohemian attitude to marriage.
