Sold: The Mary Prince Story archiveMary Prince was born into enslavement in the British Caribbean during 1790's and toiled most of her years. Hers was the first narrative of an enslaved female published in Britain and helped to bring the slave trade to an end. Sold is a cultural explosion of song, passionate dramatic narrative and storytelling theatre. Mary's ground-breaking autobiography was published in 1831. Her often candid accounts of life as an enslaved woman in the British West Indies shocked readers, and became an important tool in the abolitionist movement. Her narrative is the basis for this solo show - which at its heart celebrates the power of hope, change and freedom. In today's world when a celebrity can publicly say that 400 years of slavery is a lifestyle choice, Mary's story and her words prove that it was anything but.
