"Is't thou stoppen on?" This was the question asked of lads and lasses twice a year when farmers wanted to know whether their hired hands would work another six months for them or "tek off" in search of a new position or better wages. This sketch, written in the 1940s by a member of the society, recreates the scene in many a farming kitchen before the demise of the hiring fairs in the 1960s.
