In a time when women were second-class citizens, a group of wily ladies are determined to get their own way... When, beautiful Letitia Hardy s betrothed returns from the Grand Tour convinced that English women are dull, she sets out to gain his love with an ingenious scheme to prove him wrong. Meanwhile, the jealous Sir George Touchwood arrives in town with his new wife, Lady Frances, in tow. As restoration work on the Theatre continues apace, we continue our exploration of the undeservedly little-known dramatic repertoire of the late 18th and early 19th centuries with rehearsed readings of two more theatrical gems in March and June. A company of professional actors will breathe new life into these plays, providing you with an insight not only into what audiences in 1819, when the Theatre first opened its doors, would have been enjoying but also a taste of things to come when we re-open our doors next year. Comic encounters abound as husbands and wives, rakes and flirts pursue all manner of intrigues amid the hypocrisy of fashionable London society. Sparkling wit and brilliantly observed characters whirl through this hugely popular play, culminating in a kaleidoscopic masquerade where no-one is quite what she or he appears.
