The Burning archive'One way or another, it is those trapped in the middle that must pay the price'. James VI of Scotland is at war with the 'Black Earl' of Bothwell, the North Berwick witches and himself. The Burning explores the brutality exercised toward those caught in the middle of any struggle for religious or political power. It deals with themes of witchcraft and superstition by sets them firmly within the context of the battle between authority and anarchy. James stands for the divine right of kings; Bothwell for self expression and individual freedom.
