Helen Croft and her sister run Croft Guest House, taking in paying guests. They are very highly thought of and pillars of the community. But Helen has a dark side - she is an evil, manipulative woman who has spent years collecting snippets of information from newspapers, which she stores in an album to use to blackmail both guests and villagers should the opportunity arise, to supplement their income. She has one long-term resident, Charles and two domestic staff and the maid's boyfriend. Into this mix come the new vicar and his wife staying whilst the vicarage is being renovated and to Helen's delight she recognises him from her file.
