A detective story involving a love affair, a scandalous illegitimacy and a suicide. The play concerns the story of the life of Eleanor Marx and her bohemian circle of friends, including the witty comic East End Jewish novelist and playwright, Israel Zangwill 'The Jewish Dickens' who plays a part in bringing Eleanor to a realisation of her Jewish identity, on which her father turned his back; Olive Schreiner, Eleanor's best friend and confidante, the maverick feminist and writer who tries to save her; and Edward Aveling, the shady unionist whom Eleanor lived with for 14 years, but never married.
