Bess Bridges, a serving girl in a Plymouth tavern is in love with Captain Spencer who is about to embark on an expedition to the Azores. He is reported dead so the grief-stricken Bess decides to go and bring his body home. Disguised as a man she buys a ship, hires a crew and sets sail.
