Part gig, part performance spectacle THE FURIES smashes together rock, metal and soul songs in a radical update of an ancient story of female vengeance. Through a deliberately fractured narrative, THE FURIES re-examines a myth that takes on the traditionally masculine role of avenger. Having been brutalised and betrayed by her warrior husband Agamemnon, Clytemnestra summons her FURIES to meter out justice through the full-throated, wild music of a rock gig. On raised decking surrounding the standing audience they sing, lament and death-growl her story of envy, rage and ultimate bloody revenge. Accompanied by two multi-instrumentalists playing screaming guitars and heavy bass, pounding drums and heartbreaking saxophone. Through live music and the extended range of the female voice, THE FURIES presents an unapologetic portrait of femininity from Birmingham-based performance ensemble: KILN. Proud of their city's Heavy Metal heritage, KILN, with its all female Artistic Directorship, have appropriated this traditionally male territory to examine the extent of female fury and its terrible consequences.Company KILN Ensemble (in association with Birmingham Repertory Theatre). Director Graeme Rose.
