The Saxon Shore

T33093553
The Romans in Britain built a massive early-warning system of fortresses, look-outs and signal towers along the North Sea coast, which they called the Saxon Shore. 'Saxon' because if faced the Saxon menace, but also because communities of Germanic origin were already there. These 'Roman British Saxons' were truly an uprooted people: fully Saxon no more, never Roman, and certainly not British in the native sense. When Rome fell in 410, these 'plantationer' communities were left naked to the British aftermath... The Saxon Shore was first produced at the Almeida Theatre, London, in February 1986.
