It's Southern California, 1975 and 'meticulously unadorned' professor/ performance poet Burl Turner has recently separated from his warm and witty wife, Kate and is living with his tenacious graduate student girlfriend, Casey Hale. But maybe all Burl really wants to do is write the Great American Novel and enjoy a sandwich - in peace.
