The Tragedian - The Rise to Fame of Edmund Kean - The Fall to Infamy archiveOn the 26th of January 1814, at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, the unknown Edmund Kean made his London debut - and changed the face of British theatre forever. On Monday evening September 5th 1819, at the Theatre Royal, Richmond, the most athletic harlequin the town had ever seen gave a sensational performance in The Iron Chest. The behaviour of this infernal hell-raiser scandalised the town: prostitutes came to the dressing rooms between the acts, so the curtain could not rise until he was done with them. Adulterer. Star. Fool. The World's first celebrity hits self-destruct.
