The Way Through the Woods archiveUsing a blend of physical theatre, contemporary dance and puppetry the company create scenes akin to the fantasies of Tolkien and Pullman, conjuring an ambitious and surreal array of imagery and creatures whilst rooting the work in the reality of human relationships. Skirts writhing with worms and maggots are magicked up through the company's signature use of object manipulation, whilst an original score by Spesh Maloney creates an army of spirits rising through the floor beneath the audience. With the creation of this dreamlike landscape the story places the characters in the heart of Kipling's own work, whose uniquely playful and often unsettling short stories earned the writer a Nobel Prize for literature in 1907. The story features characters from five of Kipling's works, combining both the well-known stories of Kaa's hunting (taken from The Jungle Book) and The Cat Who Walked By Himself with the writer's lesser-known works such as The Way through the Woods and The Mother Hive.
