A tapestry of stunning imagery, deep theatricality and highly-effective use of stylised ritual - these are the hallmarks of the Chorus Repertory Theatre from Manipur, India. Ashoka, a fearsome second-century BC warrior, returns triumphant from a great victory and expecting high praise, only to be received by weeping widows and condemnation for his puffed-up pride and self-importance. A cataclysmic conflict ensues, a fundamental struggle between good and evil which can be resolved only through Ashoka's discovery of a spiritual equilibrium. Run time 1hr 30mins. Pre-show talk with Ratan Thiyam Sep 27 at 18:30 - free admission to ticket holders.
