La Traviata

Verdi's ever-popular weepie is given a sumptuous production at Venice's exquisite La Fenice, the opera-house which was tragically destroyed by fire in 1996. The heroine, Violetta, demands a star singer - and here she is played by Edita Gruberova, the famous soprano who many see as the successor to Dame Joan Sutherland. Gruberova is joined by the leading American tenor Neil Shicoff, and the great baritone Giorgio Zancanaro. The conductor is Welsh National Opera's sensational young music director, Carlo Rizzi.
