The Conscious Machine: Oxymoron or Slave to the Future?

Can a machine be conscious? Is the brain a machine? In tonight's Café Scientifique, Igor Aleksander argues that giving up ideas of the 'specialness' of human consciousness will improve our understanding of how a brain can allow for the generation of a mind, and how machines could become more compatible with humans. Professor of Neural Systems engineering at Imperial College and author of How to Build a Mind, Igor Aleksander has been researching artificial intelligence and brain modelling for over 30 years. Daniel Glaser, ICA scientist-in-residence will be chairing. Come along to air your thoughts and ask questions, or just listen to the latest ideas in science and technology. Nash Room
