The phenomenon of human consciousness has become the subject of intense examination and debate by scientists in recent years, but it has always been a focus of interest for novelists. In his novel, Thinks... David Lodge dramatised these two approaches to consciousness in a relationship between a cognitive scientist and a literary novelist. His book of essays, Consciousness and the Novel, just published in a Penguin edition, draws on the research he did for that novel and applies it more widely. David Lodge reads from both books and discusses the relationship between them.
