What does it mean to be a Protestant in Northern Ireland today? What is the role of history in forming a new identity? The Protestant community is divided as it has never been before. Is unity possible? How can traditionalists and progressives work towards the common goal of a more vital identity? Tonight David Ervine is in conversation with Gary Mitchell. David Ervine is leader of the Progressive Unionist Party and a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly; he previously served a five-year jail sentence in the Maze prison for being stopped in a car carrying a bomb. Gary Mitchell is an award winning playwright, and was recently Writer in Residence at the National Theatre; he has also written for radio and tv, and his latest film, Suffering, was awarded Best Short Film at the Belfast Film Festival.
