Installation art now sits comfortably in galleries and museums; what was once radical is now embraced and lionised by the media. But what do we mean by the term 'installation art'? What opportunities does it offer artists, and how does the 'gallery experience' it offers differ from the experiences that all institutions, from department stores to hotels, are eager to provide? To reflect on these questions, the ICA is delighted to welcome Richard Wilson, whose 20:50 is one of the most popular exhibits in the Saatchi Gallery, Bob and Roberta Smith (aka Patrick Brill) and Michael Petry and Nicolas de Oliveira, whose new book Installation Art in the New Millennium is out from Thames & Hudson. Plus Jane and Louise Wilson, whose installation A Free and Anonymous Monument is currently at the Baltic.
