Will Self and Sebastian Horsley in Conversation. Last year artist Sebastian Horsley was the first Westerner to be nailed to a cross in a private crucifixion in the Philippines. Artist Sarah Lucas recorded the crucifixion on film. After a showing of the film, Horsley talks to Will Self about the crucifixion and the artistic, psychological and spiritual driving forces behind it. Is the creative gift merely a social licence to be obsessed? Lucas commented that the crucifixion was pure sex: are pain and art, like sex, routes to transcendence? Why the need to suffer, to go to extremes - does it lead to anything valuable? Horsley is an artist and a writer, whose Sewer Life column appears in the Erotic Review. Self is a writer and journalist, whose books include How the Dead Live and Feeding Frenzy.
