One Year On: Writing in Iraq
T0
It is one year since Saddam Hussein's regime collapsed and with it a system that silenced all expression. How did that system of silencing work and how did writers work alongside it? What has happened now that Saddam has gone? How free are people to say, write and publish what they want? Tonight, three of Iraq's most celebrated writers, all of whom lived under Saddam, and continue to live in Iraq, discuss their experiences and read from their work. Much of Mohammed Khodayyir's work is set in Basra, both a city of the imagination and one of bombardment during the Iran-Iraq war. Ali Bader has published several prize-winning novels and a collection of poetry. Mayselun Hadi is a member of the Iraqi Union of Writers, and has published novels, poetry and children's books. Chaired and introduced by Judith Vidal Hall, editor, Index on Censorship.
