The 2003 Spearshaker Talk will explore the controversial theme of the summer theatre season at Shakespeare's Globe - Regime Change. This annual event is organised by the theatre to celebrate Shakespeare's Birthday and provides an important link between the Globe season and issues affecting society today. Polly Toynbee will discuss the apathy and corruption of democratic change, the violence and repression of military change, and the difficulty of changing regimes from within or without a given nation - problems which continue to trouble the world today as much as they did in the time of Shakespeare. She will present the options and obstacles facing people when they feel a change of regime is needed before opening these questions to the audience in a Q&A session.
