Sceptics or Cynics: What is Satire For?
T0
Our panel of satirists and satirised ask whether political satire is at its finest when not purely destructive, cynical or gratuitously spiteful, but inspired at some level by a positive vision. Or should satire revel in its reckless iconoclasm? Should satire be 'committed'? Should it seek to edify its audience and perhaps its targets? Or should it avoid any didactic pretensions? Can it, should it, change anything? Speakers include: writer and politician Edwina Currie and Martin Rowson, Cartoonist Laureate for London and Political Cartoonist of the Year, who believes that 'satire is about afflicting the comfortable, and comforting the afflicted.' In the Chair is Johnny Grimond, Writer at Large, The Economist.
