The ICA Economist Debate: Where Angels Fear to Tread

T0
In the rapidly globalising post-Cold War era there have been many 'new wars', often waged by factions rather than states. These have been met by 'humanitarian' and 'peacekeeping' interventions, in Somalia, Sierra Leone, the Balkans, and Iraq amongst others. These conflicts cut across traditional political lines. What light do they shed on the new world order and the future role of the United Nations? Speakers include: Tariq Ali, film-maker and writer, whose books include the forthcoming The Clash of Fundamentalisms; former foreign secretary, Douglas Hurd; Mary Kaldor, Director of the Global Civil Society programme at the LSE and author of New and Old Wars, Organised Violence in a Global Era; and journalist Melanie McDonagh, who has written extensively on the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. Johnny Grimond, foreign editor at The Economist, will be in the chair.
