Every Night Something Awful - The E.N.S.A. Show archiveSeptember 3rd, 1939 - exactly 70 years ago - was the start of the Second World War. The Entertainment National Service Association (ENSA) consisted of established artists like Vera Lynn, George Formby, Max Miller, Gracie Fields and a host of stars who would travel all over the world, at great personal discomfort and sometimes considerable risk, to 'do their bit' to entertain the troops. But ENSA also consisted of hundreds of lesser artists - some of whom were, quite frankly, dreadful! The ENSA shows were frequently re-named "Every Night Something Awful" by their reluctant audiences. We hope to re-create the best bits - every one a winner - every act a gem - every item a piece of real nostalgia for the long lost days of Variety. Come and roll out the barrel, hang your washing on the Siegfried Line, and mark this special anniversary!
